If you really want to dig into the past and immerse yourself in one of the most significant political battles in British or even world history, “Amazing Grace” is a must see. Even if it doesn’t sound very appealing, it is something everyone should see. It will suck you in and make you feel. Expect to have your conscience tested, your morals examined, and your mind exercised.
“Amazing Grace” follows the true story of William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) as he struggled to abolish the slave trade in Great Britain. The disappointment, pain and frustration of the process are played out extremely well and the relief and joy of Wilberforce’s eventual success can be felt just as strongly.
Thankfully, the film has a very genuine look and feel. It’s not a cheap half-hearted attempt to tell the general story of the abolition of the slave trade. They get into the dirt. Wigs get messy, people sweat, the grass is damp and lumpy, clothes get dirty, and sickness looks real. Because of the reality of the portrayal, it is easy to slip into the past and bring the story to life.
The only thing that really takes away from the brilliance of this film is when it jumps time periods. Sometimes it is hard to keep track of what is present, what was in the past, and when it moves on to the future. After a while, with a little thought, you can figure it out, but who wants to try to figure out what is going on when during such an otherwise incredible film.
Nevertheless, the stories, lessons, impacts, and emotions pouring from “Amazing Grace” are worth it. It will inspire, improve, and touch the hearts of anyone who watches it. The only thing you will be able to say after watching it is “wow.”
